Kamnik-Savinja Alps and Grintovci pilot area

In Kamnik-Savinja Alps and Grintovci project area, there are 27 protected areas: 21 natural monuments, 2 nature reserves, and 4 landscape parks. This is the extreme southeastern part of the Alpine world with a very diverse geological and geomorphological surface composition. It boasts with mountain ranges with peaks, glacial valleys and plateaus, coniferous forests, dwarf pines, limestone floors, screes, alpine grasslands, and chasmophytic vegetation.

At high altitudes of both areas, one can find very rich flora and fauna, and among it pioneering forests of black pine and significant parts of Slovenian populations of Eurasian pygmy-owl, capercaillie, black grouse, and rock ptarmigan. Mountains with extensively cultivated meadows and pastures also play an important role in the conservation of the population of habitat types.

Due to various factors, the conditions of some living environments of Kamnik-Savinja Alps as well as of Grintovci area are unfavorable. This applies especially to floodplain alder forests, to alpine rivers and their willow vegetation, to high-altitude meadows, and to stone crayfish.
